How To Secure Your Safe to the Floor

By Big Guy

Many people think that just because they have a safe in their home or business that their belongings are protected. Unfortunately this is not always the case. Often a burglar will find their safe and instead of trying to open it on the spot, they will simply carry it out to open at their leisure in the comfort and ease of their workshop. Even the fanciest of biometric safes can be broken into with enough time and effort, which is what he will have in his workshop (time).

Securing your safe to the floor is the simplest method to insure you have done all you can to protect the contents of that safe. It has been shown that most unsophisticated burglars will not risk the time it would take to try and break into a safe, especially when they are uncertain of the contents. You do not want the contents of your biometrics gun safe in the hands of a criminal.

Instructions to Secure Your Safe

Finding a permanent home for your safe can take some planning. Typically it is easier to mount a safe on a concrete floor, but any surface will do. Caution: this process involves drilling large holes into your floor. You will damage the surface such as carpet, tile, or concrete.

  1. Make sure that your safe has holes in the bottom to allow it to be mounted. Many less expensive home models do NOT have this option.
  2. Determine the location you want to place your safe.  Go to your local hardware store or Home Depot to purchase the proper length bolts and anchors to secure your safe.  See the chart below for possible mounting hardware.
  3. Open the safe door and use a permanent marker to mark through the holes in the bottom inside of the safe onto the floor.
  4. Move the safe out of the way before drilling.
  5. Chose a drill bit size that matches the bolts that you will be using.
  6. Clean up the dust from the floor and holes prior to mounting the safe.
  7. Insert anchors into holes if applicable.
  8. Move the safe back in place over the holes.
  9. Secure the safe according to the mounting instructions on the type of anchors you are using.
